Understanding the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, enacted in January 2018, eliminated the tax deductibility of ticket seat contributions and gifts that receive points used for home-game ticket placement, known as Beaver Points.

All gifts to Oregon State Athletics default to receiving Beaver Points unless points are declined.

 

Defining Your Support

There are two primary ways to support Oregon State Athletics: Philanthropic Donations and Required Seating or Parking Contributions. Each plays a distinct role in supporting student-athletes and determining donor benefits.

 

Philanthropic Donations

Philanthropic donations are athletic gifts not tied to the purchase of season tickets. These gifts provide flexibility in how your support is applied and how benefits are received.

 

Types of Philanthropic Donations:

Annual Fund Support (not tied to tickets)

  • May accept Beaver Points
  • Tax deductible if Beaver Points are declined
  • Eligible for IRA or Donor Advised Fund gifts if benefits and points are declined

Capital or Facilities Gifts

  • May accept Beaver Points
  • Tax deductible if Beaver Points are declined
  • Eligible for IRA or Donor Advised Fund gifts if benefits and points are declined

Endowment Gifts

  • May accept Beaver Points
  • Tax deductible if Beaver Points are declined
  • Eligible for IRA or Donor Advised Fund gifts if benefits and points are declined

Sport-Specific Gifts (excluding basketball courtside seating)

  • May accept Beaver Points
  • Tax deductible if Beaver Points are declined
  • Eligible for IRA or Donor Advised Fund gifts if benefits and points are declined

 

Required Seating and Parking Contributions

Required seating or parking contributions are necessary to purchase certain season tickets and are determined by the highest requirement among the sports for which you hold tickets.

 

Sports with Required Contributions:

Football

  • Earn Beaver Points
  • Not tax deductible, regardless of contribution method

Men’s Basketball

  • Earn Beaver Points
  • Not tax deductible, regardless of contribution method

Women’s Basketball

  • Earn Beaver Points
  • Not tax deductible, regardless of contribution method

Omaha Room

  • Earn Beaver Points
  • Not tax deductible, regardless of contribution method
