Chuck and Robin Armstrong and Family Professor in Basic Science
April 8, 2021
Chuck Armstrong graduated from OSU with a degree in basic science in 1966, having majored in chemistry. He credits his science education for teaching him how to think and develop the skills he would use in his career. “In the sciences, you are taught how to critically and analytically think,” he says. He went onto a joint career in the U.S. Navy and in banking, eventually running the Bank of America operations in Oregon. In addition to serving on the OSU Foundation Board of Trustees, Chuck served on the College of Science Board of Visitors for over 10 years including as chair, working closely with the college deans.
Chuck and his wife Robin made a gift to endow a professorship in the College of Science for faculty conducting fundamental research. Their gift also honors Chuck’s late wife, Darcia L. Hunt, and her mother, Geraldine Hunt. Darcia was a businesswoman – CEO of Bishop Trust Company – and Chuck credits her for her cooperation and support during his career, which allowed him to balance the responsibilities of his military and civilian career. Through Chuck, Darcia became a great supporter of OSU and of the College of Science.
