The Doherty Professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is the first endowed position at Oregon State University that will support the interdisciplinary area of research of ocean and climate science.

The New York-based foundation advances the philanthropic legacy of Henry L. Doherty, the founder of Cities Service. The petroleum division of this oil, gas and public utility holding company was later renamed CITGO.

“The Doherty Foundation is very pleased to begin this new partnership with Oregon State University,” said foundation president Walter R. Brown. “Our world needs pioneers who will increase our understanding of ocean and climate sciences. We also need educators who will challenge and guide a new generation of young scientists.”
